On Peace

A Common Word Between Us and You
enlargement click here

16x24 gold-trimmed dark olive double-cut mat, framed in oak and under glass, a first generation original work from multiple renderings by burning and staining on poplar and original calligraphy using multiple media.

Featured are texts from the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scriptures of the Tanakh, New Testament, and Quran overlaid in the form of two tablets of stone over an image of an old olive tree rendered from the Mount of Olives just outside Jerusalem. Light filters through the branches to infuse the garden with a transcendent peace. The words shimmer in the light and dusts of history recalling the encounters of prophets in this land with God, the messages that were given to them, and the promise of God to Abraham that through his seed the whole world would be blessed.

Scripture selections and an enlargement may be viewed in full here. Some passages include:

"Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength; this is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it; you shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments rest all the law and the prophets." Deuteronomy 6:4-5, Luke 10:27, Mark 12:29-30

"Let no foreigner joined to the Lord say, the Lord will surely exclude me from his people. For this is what the Lord says ...my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. The sovereign Lord declares - He who gathers the exiles and outcasts of his people, I will gather still others to them besides those already gathered." Isaiah 56:3,4,6-8, quoted by Jesus, Mark 11:17

"The day will come when I will make for you a covenant with all creatures and I will remove the bow, the sword, and war from the earth, and I will give you a life of peace. The wolf will dwell with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion will feed together with a little child to lead them. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea." Isaiah 11:6,9, Gates of Prayer 689

"The Lord will judge between the nations and settle disputes for many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they train for war any more. They will sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one shall make them afraid." Micah 4:3-4

"See I have set before you life and prosperity, death and adversity, blessings and curses. If you obey the covenant of the Lord your God that I have made with you this day by loving the Lord your God and walking in his ways and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then I will bless you. I call heaven and earth to witness before you this day that I have set before you life and death, therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live.." Deuteronomy 30:15-20

"Is not this the fast that I choose, to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, to let the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked to clothe them, and not to deny your own kin? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring forth quickly, your vindication will go before you and the favor of the Lord shall guard your back. Then you will call and the Lord will answer;.. and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water whose waters will never fail." Isaiah 58:6-9,11

"He has showed you, o humankind, what is good; to do justice, to love mercy, and walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

"Say, O people of the Book, let us come to a common word between us and you that we may worship our God as one." Quran, Al Imran 3:64

"God enjoins justice and showing kindness and generosity to your kindred and forbids what is oppressive, shameful, and unjust." Quran 16:90

"Oh humankind, behold God has created you out of one male and female and made you into diverse peoples and cultures so that you might come to appreciate one another." Quran 49:13

"God created us through one human being to teach us that whoever would destroy a single soul has destroyed an entire world and whoever has sustained a single human soul has sustained an entire world." Gates of Prayer 689

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... In Him was life and that life was the light of humankind. The light shown in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it... And the Word became flesh and lived among us." John 1:1,4,5,14

And more from Quran 5:48, Ephesians 2:13-19, Numbers 6:22-26, the Beatitudes, the Gospel of John, and Isaiah.

The Gift

"Take kindly the gift - your life in time. Ponder the beauty within you, and know you were made with care. Consider the wonder of the world around and pray to understand your purpose. Look to your Creator whose dream gave you life, and to the teacher whose life gave you heaven. And within you will quicken your native kinship and your offering of grace to the world. Give of your gift to others with courage and love deeply, for in loving is your spiritual treasure and your life for immortality to come. Forgive those who may render you pain, being forbearing in your justice and generous in mercy, for in grace are the secrets of peace. And do not become bitter at the trials of life that confront you, for with wisdom they will strengthen you. And yield not your faith, for all virtues are in perseverence of hardship, and heaven is by immersion in time, that you may know love and find joy, the dream of your Maker and peace." David Kreider

"To love and be loved; to find beauty in everyone, joy in adversity, and in each moment an opportunity for kindness. To listen and to care; to abhor violence and injustice; to never let it go unchallenged, to understand my humble place as well as my great worth in the universe; to recognize the wrongs I have done; to forgive those of others, and to pursue peace and understanding with my kindred upon this earth." david kreider

Prayer of Saint Francis

"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love, where there is injury, pardon, where there is doubt, faith, where there is despair, hope, where there is darkness, light, where there is sadness, joy. O divine master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life." st francis of assisi

Interfaith Peace Series - Emerson, Heschel, Rumi
enlargement click here

12x12 diamond framed in oak and under glass, a first generation original work from multiple renderings by burning and staining on poplar and original calligraphy using multiple media.

Featured are texts from Ralph Waldo Emerson, Abraham Joshua Heschel, and Rumi overlaid on an image of an old olive tree from the Mount of Olives just outside Jerusalem.

The full quotes and an enlargement may be viewed in full here. Some passages include:

"Whenever we see the doctrine of peace embraced by a nation, we may be assured it will not be one that invites injury; but one, on the contrary, which has a friend in the heart of every person, even of the violent and the base; one against which no weapon may prosper; one which is looked upon as the asylum of the human race and has the tears and blessings of humankind... I shall find them people of love, honor and truth; persons...whose influence is felt to the end of the earth; whose very look and voice carry the sentence of honor; and all forces yield to their energy and persuasion." Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Poems and Essays”

"The whole human family is bathed with love like a fine ether. How many persons we meet, whom we scarcely speak to, whom yet we honor, and who honor us! How many we see, or sit with, whom though silently, we warmly rejoice to be with! Read the language of these wandering eyes, which our hearts know... the emotions of benevolence, felt towards others are likened to the effects of fire...From the highest degree of passionate love, to the lowest degree of good will, they make the sweetness of life." Ralph Waldo Emerson

"The redeeming quality of man lies in his ability to sense his kinship with all men... How many disasters do we have to go through in order to realize that all of humanity has a stake in the liberty of one person?" Abraham Joshua Heschel

"In your light I learn how to love. In your beauty how to make poems. You dance inside my chest where no one sees you, but sometimes I do, and that sight becomes my art..." Rumi
