My Chosen Child
enlargement click here

"From the ends of the earth I have sought you and before you were born I called you by name. I formed you in your mother's womb and made you my child. I adorned you with grace and perfected your beauty. And as a mother remembers the child at her breast I have engraved you in the palms of my hands and I cannot forget you. You are precious to me and I love you. I have inscribed your heart with my covenant and will prosper your hands to lead the blind and imprisoned from darkness, and restore hope and justice to the oppressed. Nations will know I have blessed you for among them you will be my chosen child in whom I display my splendor." selections from isaiah, psalms, and ezekiel.

Memories in the Sand
enlargement click here

This ocean sunrise was photographed at Kaiteriteri Beach on New Zealand's beautiful South Island an area where the tides rise and fall can leave a hiker stranded in the shoreline's exquisite mazes of rocky inlets and peninsulas. It is between Abel Tasman Park, an adventurer's tropical paradise only accessible by water and the beautiful Marlboro Sounds, a seakayaker's dream.

A photographic overlay featuring the added touch of soft birch. Matted either in photo grey and biscay blue and framed in blue-grey oak, or in sand and gold and framed in rust-stained oak, a limited edition mixed media graphic arts print personally signed and numbered by the artist.

You
enlargement click here

"You have given me so much of yourself and your care. You believed in me and loved me for who I am, and did not judge me or use me or try to change me to suit yourself. You listened and helped me hear myself. When I just needed you there, when words were useless you understood and gave me courage to face the challenges that have made me stronger and taught me grace. You held my hopes, my fears and regrets and I felt safe and loved and strengthened for confiding in you. You gave me laughter and filled my world with your spirit and made me feel appreciated and enjoyed. You have given me happiness, and the precious gift of your friendship; your love, your beauty, and my better self. you" david kreider 2002

In that pull love is born
"It was your strength that attracted me to you and yet it is your gentleness that holds me close. It was your wise words that I listened to and yet it is your questioning that bonds me to you. It was your belief in yourself that I admired and yet it is your self doubt that endears you so. The world of opposites that spin inside you pull me in ever deeper. And it is in that pull that love is born." terri st cloud

What greater thing is there
"What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined for life - to strengthen each other in all labor, to rest on each other in all sorrow, to minister to each other in all pain, to be one with each other in silent unspeakable memories at the last parting."George Eliot

Man at the Market
enlargement click here

I saw this man in Beersheba's Bedouin Market, the region where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob settled and dug wells. His expression evokes the persona of the patriarchs, prophets, teachers and their disciples whose encounters with God in this place have given rise to three of the world's great faiths.

14x18 double-cut chestnut or dark olive/gold mat, framed in oak and under glass, a limited edition reproduction from a woodburning on poplar, personally signed and numbered by the artist.

I Called You my Child
enlargement click here

When you were an infant, I loved you, and out of the darkness I called you my child. It was I who taught you to walk and I took you up in my arms. But you did not know that I comforted you. I led you with cords of kindness, with bands of love. I was to you a mother who lifts her infant to her cheek. I bent down to you and fed you. How shall I ever give you up? My heart recoils. My passion is kindled warm and tender. I could not lift my hand to hurt you. For it is I who gave you life, and my spirit is ever with you. Return to me child, that I may keep you and hold what is good. I will renew your spirit as the garden dew and love you freely and you will flourish. Your beauty will blossom, and your fragrance go forth as wine." Hosea prphr 11:1-9,14:1-7

We Need
"We need arms that reach out to us; hugs and hands that hold us tight, smiles and encouragement to explore the world and try new things. We need friends and family to laugh and play with us; to share our memories, and to comfort and empathize when we cry. We need the wisdom of those who have learned good judgement and weathered storms with courage and grace; who have siphoned the valuable and the true from the sea of dross. We need to hear stories that nurture our dreams, that give us roots and open our eyes to understand our special place in the universe. We need those who will help us see the strength and weaknesses within us and encourage us to rise to our calling and take our place in the world. We children need." David Kreider 1997

the Mystery
"When we look at the world we are struck with awe and wonder~ for in its parts we find no inklings of intelligence or art, appreciation of beauty or sense of purpose; no moral comprehension or insight for governance; no attributes of spirit or elan; no passion, no capacities for thought or reason or feeling, no love, or hope, or joy. To find these in ourselves against all odds and physical laws to the contrary we are left to wonder~. What great mystery is embodied in us that we should find ourselves here? And what beautiful irony that in our very capacity to ask the questions we must intuit the answer and the author who has written them in our souls." David Kreider

My Child
enlargement click here

"It is not gratitude, my child I ask, nor do I seek to make my will your own; the memory of your babyhood though you are grown enchants me still; nor ever was a task performed for you save lovingly. I do indeed thank you that you have brought me days of bright felicity in all your ways and hours of grieving so few. No, do not thank me now but think upon your childhood tenderly when I have gone and if in sudden sweet remembering you too find deepening joy in each small thing done for your child or in your ministry to one beloved you will be thanking me. " author unknown

A Common Word Between Us and You
enlargement click here

16x24 gold-trimmed dark olive double-cut mat, framed in oak and under glass, a first generation original work from multiple renderings by burning and staining on poplar and original calligraphy using multiple media.

Featured are texts from the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scriptures of the Tanakh, New Testament, and Quran overlaid in the form of two tablets of stone over an image of an old olive tree rendered from the Mount of Olives just outside Jerusalem. Light filters through the branches to infuse the garden with a transcendent peace. The words shimmer in the light and dusts of history recalling the encounters of prophets in this land with God, the messages that were given to them, and the promise of God to Abraham that through his seed the whole world would be blessed.

Scripture selections and an enlargement may be viewed in full here. Some passages include:

"Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength; this is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it; you shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments rest all the law and the prophets." Deuteronomy 6:4-5, Luke 10:27, Mark 12:29-30

"Let no foreigner joined to the Lord say, the Lord will surely exclude me from his people. For this is what the Lord says ...my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. The sovereign Lord declares - He who gathers the exiles and outcasts of his people, I will gather still others to them besides those already gathered." Isaiah 56:3,4,6-8, quoted by Jesus, Mark 11:17

"The day will come when I will make for you a covenant with all creatures and I will remove the bow, the sword, and war from the earth, and I will give you a life of peace. The wolf will dwell with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion will feed together with a little child to lead them. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea." Isaiah 11:6,9, Gates of Prayer 689

"The Lord will judge between the nations and settle disputes for many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they train for war any more. They will sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one shall make them afraid." Micah 4:3-4

"See I have set before you life and prosperity, death and adversity, blessings and curses. If you obey the covenant of the Lord your God that I have made with you this day by loving the Lord your God and walking in his ways and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then I will bless you. I call heaven and earth to witness before you this day that I have set before you life and death, therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live.." Deuteronomy 30:15-20

"Is not this the fast that I choose, to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, to let the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked to clothe them, and not to deny your own kin? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring forth quickly, your vindication will go before you and the favor of the Lord shall guard your back. Then you will call and the Lord will answer;.. and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water whose waters will never fail." Isaiah 58:6-9,11

"He has showed you, o humankind, what is good; to do justice, to love mercy, and walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

"Say, O people of the Book, let us come to a common word between us and you that we may worship our God as one." Quran, Al Imran 3:64

"God enjoins justice and showing kindness and generosity to your kindred and forbids what is oppressive, shameful, and unjust." Quran 16:90

"Oh humankind, behold God has created you out of one male and female and made you into diverse peoples and cultures so that you might come to appreciate one another." Quran 49:13

"God created us through one human being to teach us that whoever would destroy a single soul has destroyed an entire world and whoever has sustained a single human soul has sustained an entire world." Gates of Prayer 689

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... In Him was life and that life was the light of humankind. The light shown in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it... And the Word became flesh and lived among us." John 1:1,4,5,14

And more from Quran 5:48, Ephesians 2:13-19, Numbers 6:22-26, the Beatitudes, the Gospel of John, and Isaiah.
